When a tooth is removed, it is important to care for the extractions site, as it can be highly susceptible to damage or infection. Following your procedure, Dr. Frank Paletta and Dr. Mo Banki will have you bite down on a gauze pad for at least 30 minutes. This will help stop any bleeding. It may take several gauzes, in 30-minute intervals, to make the bleeding stop completely.
Once the bleeding has stopped, do not disturb the extraction site. Avoid aggressively rinsing your mouth or drinking with a straw. Also avoid alcohol, smoking, and tobacco for the first 72 hours. Keep your exercise to a minimum, and keep it low-key.
Tooth extractions can often cause some pain and swelling. To reduce swelling, apply ice packs to the affected area(s) for the first 36 hours. Take pain medications as directed. If it does not decrease your pain, contact our office.
After 24 hours, try carrying out your normal dental routine. Brush and floss gently at least one time daily. By keeping a clean extraction site, you can help shorten your recovery time and avoid post-op problems.
