When you visit MSL Surgery for a dental implant, you can rest assured that you are getting the best care possible. Our oral surgeons make sure that your dental implant goes smoothly. Sometimes, however, there are nerves and vessels blocking a dental implant from being placed correctly in the lower jaw. When this happens, Dr. Frank Paletta and Mohammad Banki offer nerve repositioning in Warwick, Rhode Island, and North Attleboro, Massachusetts, to ensure that your implant is properly placed. When it comes to dental implants, it is important that there is enough room for the implant to be securely placed into the jawbone. By doing so, the implant and become integrated into the jawbone and provide a life-long restoration. However, in order to make sure that there are no obstructions to an implant, our oral surgeons may need to perform a nerve repositioning procedure.
Nerve repositioning is only performed in the lower jaw, and when patients are missing their second premolar teeth or back molars. This procedure is highly complex, and it can leave long-term or permanent numbness in the chin or lower lip. It is often performed under IV or general sedation. Our oral surgeons will begin by removing a section of the cheek, revealing the nerve and vessel canal in the lower jawbone. We then isolate the nerve and vessel bundle where the implant will be placed and pull it to the side. The implant can then be inserted, and the nerves are placed back over the implant. Our oral surgeons then refills the surgical access with a bone graft, and the area is closed.
Although allograft material is often used in a nerve repositioning graft, our oral surgeons will work with you to find the right kind of bone graft or bone graft substitute is right for you. Recovery often includes one day of bedrest and a week of limited physical activity.
